چکیده
Accurate experimental values for the free energies of hydration, or the free energies of solvation, of the H+, OH-, and H3O ions are of fundamental importance. By use of the most accurate value for the free energy of solvation of H+, the known value for the free energy of solvation of water, and the known values for the gas phase and aqueous phase deprotonation of water, the corresponding experimental free energy of solvation for OHis -106.4 ( 0.5 kcal/mol. Similarly, by use of the known values for ∆Gf 0 for H3O, H2O, and OH-, the known values for ∆Gs for H+ and OH-, and the known value for the aqueous phase autoionization of water, we obtain an experimental free energy of solvation value for H3O of -103.4 ( 0.5 kcal/mol. These values are in excellent agreement with the commonly accepted values and with the value for ∆Gs(OH) obtained from embedding clusters of OH(H2O)n in a dielectric continuum.

A hybrid quantum mechanical molecular mechanical method: Application to hydration free energy calculations
A hybrid quantum mechanical molecular mechanical ~QMMM! approach is used to study H3O , H2O, NH4 1 , NH3 , Cl , HCl, F, HF, CH3COO , CH3COOH, Ag 1 and glycine in both zwitterionic and nonzwitterionic forms in water. The free energies of hydration of these species are presented and are shown to compare favorably with experimental values. The difference in water– glycine interaction energy betwee...
متن کاملOptimization of classical nonpolarizable force fields for OH(-) and H3O(+).
We optimize force fields for H3O(+) and OH(-) that reproduce the experimental solvation free energies and the activities of H3O(+) Cl(-) and Na(+) OH(-) solutions up to concentrations of 1.5 mol/l. The force fields are optimized with respect to the partial charge on the hydrogen atoms and the Lennard-Jones parameters of the oxygen atoms. Remarkably, the partial charge on the hydrogen atom of th...
متن کاملApplication of Electrochemistry to Determination of Transfer Gibbs Energies and Autoprotolysis Constants for Aqueous Mixtures of Dimethyl Sulfoxide
A practical potentiometric method was applied successfully to experimental electrochemical data in order to determine the autoprotolysis constants (pKap) of water + dimethyl sulfoxide mixtures containing 0-90 % of DMSO by volume at 25° C and 0.1 M ionic strength was maintained in each mixture by NaClO4 solution. The results indicated that water-DMSO mixtures are more basic media than pure water...
متن کاملThermodynamical and Experimental Study of the Effects of Ball Clay-Silica Fume Combination on the Hydration and Strength
The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as the most expensive constituent of concrete is associated with destructive environmental effects and significant energy consumption. Thus, the use of supplementary cementitious materials such as Natural or synthetic pozzolans is a fundamental solution that affects the kinetics of hydration of cementitious materials. In this article, to evaluate...
متن کاملEvaluation of B3LYP, X3LYP, and M06-Class Density Functionals for Predicting the Binding Energies of Neutral, Protonated, and Deprotonated Water Clusters.
In this paper we assess the accuracy of the B3LYP, X3LYP, and newly developed M06-L, M06-2X, and M06 functionals to predict the binding energies of neutral and charged water clusters including (H2O)n, n = 2-8, 20), H3O(+)(H2O)n, n = 1-6, and OH(-)(H2O)n, n = 1-6. We also compare the predicted energies of two ion hydration and neutralization reactions on the basis of the calculated binding energ...
